Page Turners

Magazines, Catalogs & Booklets

In my mind, publication design is a form of rebellion. The tactile experience of turning the pages of a printed book or magazine can be a joyful resistance to screen reading. Print media has greater potential for historic permanence and these carefully-crafted pieces are friendlier to share with others than links that are eventually buried in a digital thread.

My clients benefit from my geeky love of this medium, from magazines to catalogs and reports. I love the process of making all of them just the same. Kerning letters, aligning text boxes, adjusting margins, and building consistent paragraph styles is a poetic endeavor. The process of selecting and cropping images that captivate the reader is just as important as the minute tweaks to each spread until the balance of copy and artwork locks up with that perfect vibration.

Hand Papermaking

This acclaimed art journal features stories and work that celebrates the art and process of papermaking. I am honored to work with its director (Twin Cites) and editor (NY) to design and produce each new issue (13 to-date and going). This 48-page color publication is mailed to subscribers biannually and is more than 35 years in the making, since 1986. Hand Papermaking features work from esteemed contemporary artists, as well as renowned artists such as Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein,  Robert Rauschenberg, and Josef Albers. Its paper portfolios are archived in libraries nationally, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Smithsonian.
