Print Permanence

Magazines, Catalogs & Booklets

Publication design is my rebellion. The tactile experience of turning the pages of a printed book or magazine is a joyful resistance to screen reading. Print media marks a moment in time and cultivates historic permanence that cannot be replicated in the digital world. These thoughtfully-crafted pieces are friendlier to share ideas with others than links, which are prone to getting lost or buried beneath endless layers of threads in the digital realms.

My clients benefit from my intense love of this medium, from magazines and field guides to catalogs and reports. I love the process of making all of them. Kerning letters, aligning text boxes, adjusting margins, and building consistent paragraph styles is a poetic endeavor. The process of selecting and cropping images that captivate the reader is just as important as the tiny tweaks made to each spread until the balance of copy and artwork locks up with that perfect vibration.

Hand Papermaking

Hand Papermaking is an acclaimed art journal featuring stories and work that advances the art and process of papermaking, published since 1986. This 48-page color publication is mailed to national and international subscribers biannually and celebrates work from emerging papermakers and esteemed contemporary artists, as well as renowned artists such as Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, and Josef Albers. The publication’s paper portfolios are archived in libraries nationally, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian.

My roles include publication design, content flow and layout, image color correction, and working with the editor to manage and refine the house styles. In 2024 I was assigned the role of production manager. Working collaboratively with the editor to design each issue, I am honored to have been part of the Hand Papermaking team since 2017.

Anniversary Publication Design

Minnesota Master Naturalist Program Celebrates 20 Years

In this project, I worked with University of Minnesota Extension to produce a 12-page print publication for an event celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Minnesota Master Naturalist Program. The project included publication planning, design and layout, design for 3 key graphs, image correction, editorial consult, and illustration for a centerfold graphic. I worked with team members to determine publication size, paper, print approach, and mailing requirements. With feedback and guidance from the team, I developed the publication schedule and process for content production. The publication was digitized in accordance with accessibility requirements and adhered to U of M Extension brand and content standards with guidance from the Extension's principal designer and communication specialist.

Leading workshops and collaborating with creatives and educators, Tanner's Minnesota Lichen Guide is now in it’s 2nd Edition and 4th printing. As a fellow Minnesota Master Naturalist, I had the honor of working with Tanner as a volunteer to create the 1st printing of the 40-page 1st edition book. The 2nd edition has expanded to 100 pages, to be published in 2026. My roles include field guide design, layout, publication planning, print vendor communication and quote acquisition, color adjustment for select images, copy proofing.
